ABOUT
about

“S C A L E” ; a graduated range of values forming a standard system for measuring or grading something; a system of benchmarks that determine something, or someone, to a quantifiable value.

We commence this journey of architectural education with an introduction to variations: pen, paper, colour combinations, font types, lineweight, design elements, space. Much like an idea that has no limitations, constraints or concern; it was a freedom of creative expression — we were once a hundred wide eyed, naive individuals eager to learn and absorb every possible medium in search for our own design identity.

But as we ascend, the human scale is introduced alongside technicalities; things that make a building work and live, and from a hundred we are left with sixty.

The first part of architecture for each individual can not be simplified into a single word or phrase. It is a contrasting cluster of different experiences, lessons, and ideologies – simply immeasurable. Some of us have reached the finish line, some have not, yet it is with certainty that the journey itself was not of who or what is “the best” but of self discovery.

Unlike benchmarks, individual experience is unquantifiable.

‘not to scale’ is an architecture graduate exhibition that is a summation of our journey to self-discovery and celebration of future designers, and also those who might not want to be, too.

Senior Lecturer & Architect

Module Coordinator, Architectural Design Project

"I interpret the theme for graduation ‘not to scale’ into reflections. Firstly, is your worth not measured in the size of your contribution, big or small as long it’s making an impact on you and lives of many then that is enough to define your value. Secondly, do not measure own success in someone else's scale, always put money last, because what matters is how you value, respect and staying true to yourself and to your craft, then life will reward you eventually.

On behalf of all the lecturers, I would like to say, well done on achieving a milestone in your young lives. It was a pleasure and a privilege of having you in my classes and being your final studio mentor. May the knowledge and values you learned in school be applied to your career and life.

The best parting line I can give you is this quote:

'The difference between school and life,  In school, you are taught a lesson and then given a test that teaches you a lesson.  In life, you are given a test that teaches you a lesson.'

- T. Bodett

Congratulations on your exhibition, soon your graduation and wishing you all a bright future ahead. "
